Hundreds of men and women from the Western Angami area in Nagaland rallied in Kohima to protest the alleged killing of a local leader, Kezhalelie Lawrence Miasalhou, by two Naga wrestlers.

The Western Angami Youth Organisation (WAYO) organised the rally, which began at Paramedical junction and included a short program at Old MLA junction before proceeding to the Deputy Commissioner’s office to submit a memorandum.

The incident, reported to Kohima Police on May 18, involved a quinquagenarian hospitalised at a private hospital following a physical assault after a vehicular traffic scuffle. Miasalhou succumbed to his injuries the next morning.

Police have registered a criminal case under various sections of the Indian Penal Code and arrested two individuals, Neizosetuo Kire (24) and Khrietsonyü Whuorie (25), both known Naga wrestlers from Kohima Village.

Protesters, donning Angami traditional attire, held banners and placards that read “We condemn murder”, “respect elders”, “Justice delayed is justice denied”, “wrestlers or killers”, “all roads are not yours”, “Am I next?”, and more.

During an interaction with the media after the memorandum was submitted to the DC, Khrielievi Chüsi, General Secretary of the Mezomia Mechü Kehou (MMK) informed that the deceased was a political assistant to the deputy commissioner of Kohima, and also the president of the MKK, a citizens' forum of Mezoma village under Kohima district.

The memorandum submitted by WAYO demanded the arrest of the two accused under all relevant sections of the law and be given exemplary punishment. The memo also stated that no bail should be given to them under any circumstances, warning that if any person or group tries to bail them out, they will be held responsible for any untoward consequences.
Chüsi informed that the DC assured cooperation and legal action against the culprits.

Earlier, during the gathering, WAYO President, Neitolie Khrietuo Peseyie, said that the protest was held to show their resentment against the “murder” of a tall leader by two Naga wrestlers. He said that the incident had tainted the reputation of Naga wrestling, a sport cherished by the Angami Nagas.

Western Angami Public Organisation (WAPO) President, Kepelhoutuo Chüsi, said that the community is not against any family, clan, or village. However, the peaceful rally was held to voice their sorrow that such an inhuman act should not be repeated.

In a civilised society, he said that issues should be settled through dialogue and not by physically assaulting one another. He said that the Angami community which hosts other Naga communities in the state capital, must be hospitable.

Southern Angami Youth Organisation (SAYO) president Metekhrielie Mejura, Chakhroma Youth Organisation (CYO) president Seyieneilhou Keyho, Northern Angami Youth Organisation
(NAYO) Vice President Kevizelie Pienyü, Angami Youth Organisation (AYO) president Kesosul Christopher Ltu, and MMK general secretary Khrielievi Chüsi addressed the gathering.

The speakers sought justice and demanded that law enforcement agencies punish the accused as per relevant sections of the law.
Meanwhile, a criminal case under sections 323/325/352/302 of the Indian Penal Code was registered by the police following which the two accused were arrested on Sunday.

The Kohima Village Council (KVC) and the Kohima Village Youth Organisation (KVYO) also condemned the attack on the deceased, and his son by the two accused.
The village bodies demanded legal action against the perpetrators, urging that the law be applied rigorously to ensure justice.
