South African anti-apartheid activist, Nelson Mandela was released from prison, after a 27 year sentence in 1990. His release marked the beginning of the end of South Africa's apartheid (Afrikaans for "Apartness"). The apartheid upheld segregationist policies against non-white citizens of South Africa for over 50 years from 1948. Alongside President F.W. de Klerk, Mandela led efforts to negotiate an end to apartheid, which came after two thirds of white South Africans voted for equal rights for all South Africans in a 1992 referendum. Mandela was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1993 and the following year, in the country's first fully representative general election, Mandela became South Africa's first Black president. His government focused on dismantling the legacy of apartheid by fostering racial reconciliation. His birthday, July 18th 1918, was declared "Nelson Mandela Day" by the UN in 2009 and is celebrated annually to shine light on his legacy and fight for freedom and equality.
