The Whiskey Film - Season 1 Chapter 3 - Craft as F&$K. The Story of Deerhammer Distillery
Chapter 3 - Craft as F$%K. How the desire for a new creative outlet in life eventually gave way to one of the front-running distilleries helping to define a brand new style of whiskey, American Single Malt.
Deerhammer Distillery sits in the valley below the base of the 14,000ft+ Mt Princeton, located right on the main street of this Colorado mountain town. Starting in 2010, it was the Arkansas River, and being a “beach town” in the middle of the Colorado Rockies that drew the Eckstein’s to this area. Burnt out from graphic designing ads, Lenny was eager to seek out a new creative outlet. “I always liked the idea of sucking at something, because there is nowhere to go, but up.”
The story is about two people hand-building and pursuing their dreams. Having built the distillery by themselves, to the 70hr+ weeks sleeping next to the still, watching the runs throughout the night, getting enough spirit so they could open their doors. Co-founder Lenny Eckstein built the initial iteration of the distillery on his own, cobbling together repurposed machinery and random stainless vessels. The story of Deerhammeris steeped in tradition and crafted in Colorado.
As a grain-to-glass distillery, Deerhamer is focused on process. What does it mean to produce an American Single Malt whiskey? Deerhammer American Single Malt Whiskey is our cornerstone contribution to the field of American craft spirits. Starting its life as a porter-style 100% malted barley mash, it’s further shaped by open-air fermentation before passing through our squat-head copper pot stills and maturing in charred heavy toast / light char new white oak. Boasting a complex profile with notes of coffee, chocolate, and dark fruit, you won’t mistake it for its Scottish or Irish counterparts.
The story of whiskey is a story of time how time changes us, and our character. Memories and great whiskey are all we have as relics of the past.

Traverse Cinema Studio presents The Whiskey Film, a visual collective of tales about those who work to define whiskey -- as well as themselves, -- as they explore their craft. The key concept is that change occurs over time, not only in the whiskey itself but also in the lives of those who create it. Like the spirit in the distilling process, whiskey makers change under the pressures of their lives and within the context of their craft.
Season One | Told in chapter episodic form, The Whiskey Film’s characters illustrate the key influences of a great whiskey; roots, art, science, agriculture, aging, passion, tradition, focus, branding, education, and patience.
