Where do sea glass marbles come from?
Today we go hunting for seaglass on Leven's expansive beach. Among our finds are an old swing-top bottle stopper, a codd marble, and, surprisingly, a kiln stilt of the sort we find commonly in Kirkcaldy - a first for us in Leven!! Nicole briefly explains the history of codd marbles, their place in the drinks industry, in childrens games and, how they become the fascinating seaglass marbles found and treasured today.


The Shell House in Leven
Leven's beach is a treasure trove for shell collectors! Among the shells, abundantly strewn across Leven's beach, we find some old, broken, buckie (whelk) shells, which leads us to visit the site of Leven's once treasured seaside attraction, the Buckie Hoose, or Shell House. After returning home, we look through some old postcards to find a message sent to Craig's grandmother from 1958, when her cousin Jean was on holiday in the East Neuk of Fife.



Apologies for referring to the Buckie Hoose as a "Georgian" attraction, it was of course an attraction during the reign of George V, and thus much later than the Georgian period.



Leven was once a thriving Victorian seaside resort in the Kingdom of Fife. After the railway station opened up in 1854, Victorian tourists flocked to the area, from Glasgow in the West and Edinburgh to the south, in large numbers for their seaside holidays. It remains to be a popular tourist destination to this day, though the numbers of visitors has fallen significantly since the passenger carriers stopped coming to Leven Railway Station in 1969. These days Leven offers an affordable place for tourists to stay while visiting the villages in the East Neuk and St Andrews.

During the reign of George V, a local resident, William R Bisset, began to decorate his home and garden in shells collected from the nearby beach. By 1927, Bisset had completed the work and opened the attraction to the public. By 1930, 30,000 people were visiting this seaside attraction/sea shell themepark, marveling at the strange and entertaining sights on display. William's son, James, continued his father's enthusiasm for this work until his death in 1978. Shortly afterwards, the shell gardens were removed and a bungalow was build on the site. Both Bisset's house and the newer Bungalow remain on the site today, though most of the old shell house decorations are no longer to be seen. Only a few areas, on the external wall, and the walls of a courtyard leading to the bungalow, remain decorated in shells, mosaic pottery, and figurines.
