what admissions officers are really looking for is a glimpse into your life. your personal life.

and that goes beyond your major or even your intended career.

for example. let’s say you did a groundbreaking science experiment where you found a way to combine to elements that usually don’t co-exist. super cool. except that tells us nothing about YOU! now what would make this essay more interesting is if we saw the origins of your interest in science and experimentation. what would make it even more personal is if we saw how you applied this chemistry “lesson” in other areas of your life. like when you made friends with someone you thought was your op. or how you innovated a “solution” in your personal family conflicts. while your work in the lab is interesting, I also want to get to know other parts of your life on a deeper, personal level.

by bringing up specific details from different parts of your life that are unrelated to your major/career, I get the sense that you are a fully developed human being (and that makes me excited to read the 2-10 other supplements as part of your application)!

don’t just tell me what happened. SHOW ME HOW IT HAPPENED. drop us into the moment with you, and see if you can make your growth work on multiple levels. in my own comm app personal statement, I certainly grew as a writer/storyteller, but more importantly, I grew as a daughter.

be vulnerable. show us around your imperfect life. that’s what makes you, you.
