between 1858 and 1947, British rule presided over 25 major famines in India — most of them man-made. These were not natural disasters, but policy-driven starvation events that caused prolonged hunger, trauma, and mass death.

One of the worst was the Bengal Famine of 1943, engineered under wartime colonial policies, where nearly 3 million Indians died while food was exported out of the country.

But famine doesn’t end when food returns.

Modern science now shows that long-term starvation and trauma can permanently alter gene behaviour through epigenetic changes — changes that can be passed down across generations. These inherited adaptations, once meant for survival, now increase the risk of Type 2 diabetes, insulin resistance, obesity, and metabolic disease in descendants — even when their lifestyles are healthy.
