Euromed Audivisual met up with Tunisian filmmaker Kaouther Ben Hania, when her first feature Le Challat de Tunis (li. "The Challat of Tunis") premiered at the opening of the ACID programme at this year's Cannes Film Festival.
Le Challat de Tunis recounts a true incident in Tunisia that became an urban legend. A man on a motorcycle, razor in hand, rides around the capital hoping to slash women's buttocks. In this coproduction between Tunisia, France and Canada, the director tries to understand the man behind the urban legend.
"It's the story of a man on a motorcycle, razor in hand, [who rides around] aiming for women's buttocks in the streets. The film is an investigation that I carry out in post-revolutionary Tunisia, to understand who this man is and what his motivations are."
"The topic required a documentary style because, in the beginning, it was a minor incident, but it soon blew up into an urban legend, with lots of rumours. The story had already been adapted many times in the collective conscience."
