The phrasal verbs in this lesson:

go for
to choose or decide
Examples:
1. I’m just booking the hotel for our business trip next month. Should we go for the one next to the conference centre or would you prefer to stay in in the city centre?
2. All three of the software solutions look very good. Which one do you think we should go for?

take off
to suddenly start to be successful or popular
Examples:
1. We are delighted with the way the business has taken off recently.
2. We didn’t have very high expectations when we launched this product, so we were very surprised to see how quickly it took off.

fill someone in
to give someone details about something, especially when they missed a meeting or were not present when the information was first discussed
Examples:
1. Tom can’t come to the meeting. Can you fill him in later?
2. Martin: You know there have been some changes to the project plan, don’t you?
Christina: Yeah, Jenny filled me in so I’m up to speed. (if you’re up to speed with something, you know the latest information about it)

bank on
if you bank on something happening, you expect it to happen and rely on it happening
Examples:
1. The company is banking on its latest product to help them out of the crisis.
2. We hope this new software update will solve the problem but we’re not banking on it.

drum up
if you drum up business or support, you make an effort to get more of it
Examples:
1. The company is organising the event to drum up business.
2. We need to put our heads together and find new ways to drum up business.

catch up on
to do something you didn’t have time to do earlier
Examples:
1. Susan is working late to catch up on some project work.
2. Ana: Are you joining us for a drink later?
Alex: I’d love to but I have a lot to catch up on. Maybe next time.

get something across
to manage to make someone understand or believe something
Examples:
1. The message we want to get across to our customers is that we will stop at nothing to provide the best service.
2. His English isn’t perfect but he still got his point across.

pitch in
to join others and help with an activity or task
1. We should be able to finish on schedule if everyone pitches in.
2. Charlie always pitches in if we’re having trouble getting something finished on time – he’s such a great colleague.
