Tampa city leaders are advancing plans to provide financial aid to homeowners impacted by Hurricane Milton, particularly in areas not designated as flood zones.

Tampa City Council has proposed allocating $3 million from the State Housing Initiative Partnership (SHIP) program to assist residents in rebuilding their homes after severe flooding caused by pump and generator failures in North Tampa neighborhoods.

“This is step one of what we have to do to help people stay in their homes,” said Councilman Luis Viera, emphasizing the importance of preserving affordable housing.

Residents like Kevin Sewell, whose home was inundated with several feet of water despite being in flood zone X, feel the city bears responsibility.

“We want what’s right,” Sewell said shortly after the storm.

The plan, expected to be finalized by Jan. 23, aims to launch an application system by mid-February.

Some residents, such as Robin Lockett, urged prioritizing flood relief over other projects like extending the Riverwalk.

“The flooding in North Tampa is urgent,” she stressed.
