A recent study by the Association for Investment in South Africa says life insurance fraud amounted to more than 7-hundred-and-80-million rand in 2021.
This is believed to be driven by increasing cases of murder for money in the Eastern Cape, with life insurance policies taken out before victims are killed.
Residents from the small town of Cradock in the Karoo are living in fear, with a suspected syndicate operating in the area.
But authorities are catching up with the perpetrators.
Five people accused of murder, and conspiracy to commit murder, have recently appeared in court.
