Kris Brooks created a Black History Musical Program called "Black History: A Celebration Through Music." Her program was created in response to the frustrations of myself and the Black community, with many elements negatively targeting our people of color, especially our youth. Coming from the angle of a musician, an artist, she knew she needed to invest myself in my community of color, where she currently resides in Bed-Stuy, Brooklyn. Frustrated with all the police brutality affecting our communities, as well as the lack of resources in some of our communities, she wanted to find a way to empower these Black and Brown people, focusing on the youth. An idea came to mind to create a historical music program to teach kids where they came from and how our music has shaped our society. "So many Black kids especially don't feel a sense of identity, and that's a feeling of powerlessness. To teach them how great and powerful they are- by knowing the history of their people, will only lead to more confidence, and success in the future! I created this program because of the lack of education we get on REAL US history, which further suppresses people of color, and if I can do that through music, which is where my passion lies, then it's all worth it. My true aim is to uplift our young ones through creative forms of education through music!"
