SPENDING QUALITY TIME WITH GOD
Spending quality time with God, often referred to as entering "the secret place of the Most High" (based on Psalm 91:1), typically involves engaging in private and intentional spiritual practices designed to foster a deeper relationship and communion with the Divine.
Spending time with God also means trusting implicitly in His love, trusting in God’s ability and willingness to give you everything you need to do his will and glorify His name.
Despite the obstacles that we may face on our way, the LORD desires that we spend time with Him, to seek Him and discover His secrets. To seek His presence and spend quality time with Him in fellowship and communion.
God is always present with us because He is omnipresent, He is near us every time, and His presence abides with us. He keeps a covenant with us to always stand by us, work with us, for us, and work everything for our good. However, He longs for us to seek His presence so we can understand Him. Although He knows all the mysteries in the universe, He reveals His secrets to us only when we intentionally seek Him!
The Psalmist records in Psalms 14:2, "The LORD God looks down from heaven upon the children of men, to see if there are any who understand, who seek Him". (Paraphrased)
If we don't cultivate the habit of seeking God regularly, we may take His grace and love for granted. We may begin to feel comfortable in our lives, such that our comfort invades our devotion to God. We may get so used to our relationship and fellowship with Him that we become flippant and careless in handling them.
Chances are, we may get "need-oriented" in our walk with Him, also, that we imagine He is just interested in providing for our needs and making sure that we have an abundant supply of them, or give us directions when we are lost, and make sure we don’t miss our way in life.
God's desire is not so that He may always receive our list of requests as if all He ever cares about is to attend to each item in our lists. As the Head of His spiritual family, what He wants from us is a deep relationship and fellowship, so that we can be transformed from our old selves and become like Him in our nature and character.
Becoming like God is possible when we spend quality time with Him in the secret place. It is a place of consecration and prayer that is beyond our physical realm of earthly material, but a spiritual realm, a place where we can feed our spirit and soul to grow in the knowledge of God.
As we spend quality time in the presence of God, He causes us to be vigilant and not get swept off our feet by the lawless and loose lifestyle that is prevalent in the world. He puts in us a strong desire to connect with Him regularly, just as He wants to connect with us.
God is ALMIGHTY! He is Stronger, Mightier, and Greater than us; nonetheless, He longs for a fellowship with us. He is everywhere, although He is invisible, He assures us that we can spend time with Him everywhere and every time. We can reach Him through our faith.
We can be like King David in the Scriptures, whose greatest delight is to be in the presence of God. He says in Psalms 27:4, "One thing have I desired of the LORD, that will I seek after; that I may dwell in the house of the LORD all the days of my life, to behold the beauty of the LORD, and to inquire in His temple".
King David made seeking God a habitual and intentional thing. He saw his time with God as something he enjoyed doing and not dull moments. He enlivened his spiritual efforts and time in God's presence, rather than keeping them as empty religious rituals. Above all else, his heart's cry was for him to be with God!
His utmost desire is to commune with the LORD in a mutual, loving fellowship, the kind that was lost in the Garden of Eden when satan tempted Adam and Eve and they sinned against God. From the place of communal companionship, King David was able to journey on in life, with God leading him and providing for his every need, just as He did for the Israelites in their wilderness wanderings.
As we commit to spending time with God, we grow more intimately connected to Him. The God who seems as mysterious as the universe will come as real as the next person beside us. Our experience in His presence will become our source of strength, faith, and rejuvenation.
The WORD of God makes great promises to us when we seek God in a secret place. It shows us that when we draw near to God, He draws near to us, too. When we devote ourselves to Him, He blesses us in many amazing ways. (James 4:8)
Psalm 91 reveals more blessings than we can derive from seeking God and remaining in His Presence. It promises deliverance from the enemy's secret plots, God's preservation, protection, provision, promotion, and rest. Those who explore the secret place of God will not struggle with stress and distress.
