Replay attacks are designed to deceive systems by replaying intercepted authentication packets, allowing the attacker to impersonate a legitimate user. By gaining access to login credentials, certificates, token responses, or biometric data, attackers can forge logon attempts and acquire the same level of access as the original user. Fortunately, modern operating systems, networks, protocols, services, and applications employ various replay-protection mechanisms to actively prevent such attacks.

In this video, we will explore several measures used to thwart replay attacks, including packet sequencing, time stamps, challenge-response, and ephemeral session encryption. Packet sequencing ensures that out-of-order or delayed packets are rejected. Time stamps set a time frame within which packets must arrive to be accepted. Challenge-response authentication involves the server generating a random number challenge for the client, making replay attacks infeasible. Ephemeral session encryption utilizes session-specific symmetric encryption keys that are random and nonrepeating, preventing replay attacks effectively.

Replay attacks in wireless environments can take different forms, such as deceiving base stations or causing denial-of-service scenarios. We will discuss the importance of maintaining up-to-date firmware on base stations and utilizing wireless-focused network intrusion detection systems (NIDS) to detect and prevent wireless replay attacks.
