In this episode, I return to work on the DailyJoule Web App, a project I first started streaming about two years ago.

After dealing with hosting provider issues and neglecting the app for a while, it’s time to roll up my sleeves and tackle some persistent problems. This full-stack TypeScript app, encompassing both front-end and back-end development, needs quite a bit of troubleshooting to get back on track. Join me as I walk through the intricacies of debugging, updating, and simplifying its setup. Here's a snapshot of what we tackled:

*Zod Validation Issues:* We decipher and simplify the environment validation logic which was previously convoluted with multiple exception cases for CI, testing, and production environments.
*Prisma Database Workflows:* From dealing with migrations to introspection, I explore how Prisma interacts with the database and tackle issues arising from outdated settings and mismatched schemas.
*Dependency Updates:* With the app transitioning from Node 18 to Node 24 Alpine and switching to TSX for running TypeScript, I update dependencies to modernize the setup.
*OAuth Authentication & Discord API:* Fixing broken Discord Authentication by resolving secret mismatches and updating redirect URIs to regain login functionality.
*Local Development Challenges:* From setting up Docker Compose environments to resolving functionality issues caused by files missing during the migration from Windows to Linux.
*Revamping Features:* Exploring app features like meal entry, friends functionality, and improving user settings, which are broken or incomplete, and outlining steps to rebuild them.

During the process, I share insights into project decisions, like keeping this private repository versus making it open source, handling database setup with Postgres, and dealing with test reliability and database mocks. This stream embodies the iterative process of troubleshooting, debugging, and enhancing software—teaching valuable lessons along the way.
