The Deltics are back on the ECML

On a cold and blustery April 21st 2023, I popped out for an hour to capture the first Deltic out of Kings Cross for some considerable time. Deltic Locomotive 55022/D9000 'Royal Scots Grey' was heading up a one way run to Edinburgh on behalf of Intercity.

I always like to arrive at whatever spot I’ve chosen a bit early as it gives me a chance to record other services, and also means there is less chance of missing the star of the show should it be routed early. What struck me was the diversity of classes and liveries that passed me in the 45 minutes I spent at Sixhills way over bridge.

66731 ‘Captain Tom Moore’ seen running light engine forming the 0L37 0957 Hoo Junction Up Yard to Whitemoor Yard L.D.C Gbrf service, followed by 180’s, 387’s (including 387201 in the Gatwick Express livery), 91’s in the splendid new Intercity liveries (including 91101 Flying Scotsman), and several flavours of 800’s, from LNER and Lumo railway companies.

Then even over the constant traffic noise and wind you could clearly hear that unique sound a Deltic makes, with the locomotive emerging from the curve almost half a minute later. Hauling a consist made from Scot Rail coaching stock, a single Pullman coach and a generator coach in the old ‘ blood and custard’ livery, with 90001 ‘Royal Scot’ in its retro Intercity Swift livery tagged on the rear.

Overall, quite an enjoyable hour, despite that cold North-easterly wind.
