This is my DIY grid-assist home solar power system I installed in my garage. 4,500w in attached solar, 3,500w inverter, transfer switch at mains. $330 x 12 = $4,000 in batteries. Just under three years of service? Actually, they started puking themselves about one year ago. So, realistically, at about two years is when they started failing. Never again will I do flooded lead-acid batteries! Too much f*cking drama, acid, acid-mist, watering, unhealthy (my eyes are watery, headaches, stuffy nose, skin irritation, wheezy). Yes, I ventilate and use personal protection (gloves and eye protection). Some folks have better luck with FLA. Many of those guys only take them down to 80% SOC. My question to them...why spend the money if your only using 20% of the battery? 50% DOD is negligible. I understand folks want to get "more years out of their batteries"...but, it is almost 2019. My battery bank was maintained and operated within specs. DOD never below 50%...more like 65-70% average. However, there are some things I would have done differently (no battery box, more separation, don't take advice from "Mr Know-it All's", and a few other things I won't mention). We should all be able to have solar or wind off-grid batteries that will last at least 10+ years. Lithium is promising IMO. My other Trojan batteries (Overdrive 31AGM) are doing excellent. My Interstate Batteries 35aH deep cycle AGMs are also performing excellent. Hell, I even replaced my truck battery with an Interstate Batteries starter-AGM. The truck fires right up perfectly now. I just bought my first 10aH lithium LiFePO4 battery. So, screw flooded lead-acid and esp these Trojan L16E-AC batteries...IMO, not worth the money, time, and drama associated with maintenance. They never seemed to perform the way I expected. The acid and acid mist is nasty stuff...with AGM or lithium (LiFePO4) you won't have those issues. Spend the extra money for the "good stuff", consider a 48v system too. Talk to no-shyt experts in the field or installers...not blokes on YouTube. Companies in the business (like the AltE Store, Midnite Solar, Outback Power, Magnum, and a few others) really know their stuff...consult with them. Solar power home systems are complex, time consuming, and expensive...but, the rewards are great if done correctly and not make the mistakes I did. If your not comfortable working with electronics...don't attempt. Also, learn from those who put themselves out there...we do this to inspire, help, and educate others.
