Описание к видео McNair Baylor Research Conference 🧑🏻‍🏫 🧠 | Summer Travel Vlog 2024

And just like that, I’ve officially presented at my first-ever research conference! This opportunity not only allowed me to showcase my research but also marked the beginning of my journey as a researcher. So, come along as I take you through my experience at the Summer 2024 McNair Baylor Research Conference in Waco, Texas.

Thank you to Wesleyan University’s Ronald E. McNair Post-Baccalaureate Program, Baylor University, Conference Staff, Professor Royette T. Dubar, the Sleep & Psychosocial Adjustment (S.P.A.) Lab, and of course Zoe Kuhn, Ethan Chu, and Venus Marroquin for accompanying me on this adventure! Despite travel complications and endless cups of tea, I couldn’t have asked for a better group of scholars/researchers to spend the weekend with – super excited for many more research conferences to come.

Conference Abstract:
Quantitative research indicates that the COVID-19 pandemic amplified existing disparities in health and well-being among individuals from different socio-demographic groups in the U.S. However, more qualitative research is needed to explore how university students from minority groups navigated the 2020 anti-racist protests during the pandemic. Consequently, this study elicited narratives from a sample of emerging adults from minority backgrounds (N = 32) regarding the perceived impact of the pandemic on their lives and reactions to the 2020 anti-racist protests. Responses from online interviews were coded using thematic analysis. Regarding the perceived impact of the pandemic, results indicated 10 themes: i) A shocking new reality; ii) Weighing the loss of lives during the pandemic; iii) Frustrations with governmental, political, and societal disillusionment; iv) Disrupted expectations and lost milestones; v) Personal reflections: Internal conflict; vi) “Silver linings”; vii) Minimal perceived impact; viii) Stressful & shifting family dynamics; ix) “Life in a COVID bubble”; and x) Living in fear: heightened anxiety during times of uncertainty. Furthermore, regarding reactions to the 2020 anti-racist protests, results indicated 5 themes: i) Individual action; ii) Collaborative action; iii) Active vs. passive/indirect engagement; iv) Tensions within difficult conversations; and v) Varying degrees of exposure for opportunities to engage. These results shed light on how emerging adults across diverse socio-demographic groups navigated the pandemic and highlight the need for families and university administration to provide critical resources to support the well-being of emerging adults from diverse socio-demographic backgrounds.
