We're now tuning in to full courtroom coverage as New Jersey v. Paul Caneiro heads to trial in one of the state’s most disturbing and long-running homicide cases. After more than seven years of pretrial litigation, delays, and evidentiary battles, jurors will finally hear the evidence prosecutors say proves Caneiro murdered four members of his own family.
On November 20, 2018, four members of the Caneiro family were found murdered inside their Colts Neck, New Jersey home, which was intentionally set on fire. The victims were Keith Caneiro (50), his wife Jennifer (45) and their two children, Jesse (11) and Sophia (8). Earlier that same morning, a separate fire was set at Paul Caneiro’s own residence — a detail prosecutors allege was a deliberate diversion meant to mislead investigators.
Emergency crews were dispatched at 5:01 a.m. to Paul Caneiro’s home after reports of smoke. Upon arrival, firefighters found portions of the residence engulfed in flames. Investigators later documented a red gasoline can in the driveway and a charred glove on the ground.
Paul Caneiro (59), his wife, Diana, and their two adult daughters escaped the fire and were later located nearby in a Porsche SUV. When questioned, Caneiro’s wife, told authorities she was unaware of anyone who might want to harm their family.
Just over seven hours later, authorities responded to another fire — this time at the nearby home of Paul Caneiro’s brother and business partner, Keith Caneiro. Officers discovered Keith’s body in the front yard. He had been shot once in the back and four times in the head while Jennifer Caneiro was stabbed multiple times and both children suffered fatal sharp-force injuries.
⚖️ Charges Paul Caneiro Faces
Paul Caneiro has pleaded not guilty and is charged with:
→ First-Degree Murder (4 counts) — for the deaths of Keith, Jennifer, Jesse, and Sophia Caneiro
→ Aggravated Arson (First-Degree) — for intentionally setting fires connected to the crimes
→ Unlawful Possession of a Firearm
→ Unlawful Possession of a Knife
→ Insurance Fraud — tied to alleged post-fire insurance claims
If convicted, Caneiro faces life in prison without the possibility of parole, with additional sentencing exposure related to the arson, weapons, and fraud charges.
