Draw + Shade a Gumball Machine Inspired by Artist Wayne Thiebaud // Art Lesson + Project for Kids

Could artwork look good enough to eat? Wayne Thiebaud painted delicious-looking cakes, pies, ice cream, and even candy. We'll look at Thiebaud's painting titled "Three Machines" and learn a drawing technique that'll trick our eyes into creating what we actually see. We'll also learn a shading technique that'll help make our gumballs looked rounded, not flat.

My most favorite part of this project... there are no mistakes in art! So have lots of fun with these colorful gumballs.

White project paper
Black fine point marker
Colored pencils
Paper or cloth to protect your work surface

TIME NEEDED
The video is approximately 30 minutes, but the actual project may take about 60 minutes to complete depending on how much you choose to color. Remember, this video can be paused at any point if you need more time to complete a step.​

AGE LEVEL
This art lesson + project is for all ages but geared towards the elementary level; junior high students may enjoy the shading portion.

YOUNGER STUDENT OPTION
Have a young preschooler who wants to create alongside their older sibling? Skip drawing the actual machine, and have them practice drawing circles on their paper, then use colored pencils to color in each gumball. Vary the colors and teach them some new color names in the process. They can even learn to shade their circular gumballs if they show interest.

PARENT/TEACHER TIP
This project can easily be divided into two sessions. Complete the drawing stage during session one, stop the video, then restart the video on your next art day and learn to color, shade, and add shadows in session two.

And, for those who want to limit the coloring, keep your gumball pile low, so there aren't as many pieces to shade.
