Bend, in central Oregon, is one of our favorite small cities anywhere, and we'll show you why in this week's Grand Adventure. Although it started life as a logging town in the early 1900s, situated right at the transition point between mountainous ponderosa pine forests to the west and arid high desert to the east, Bend is now best known as a gateway to many outdoor sports and recreation opportunities, including mountain biking, skiing, fishing, hiking, rock climbing, paddling, golf and more. Life here, especially in summer, centers on the Deschutes River that passes right through the center of town.
From our boondocking campsite at Kapka Butte Sno Park up near Mt. Bachelor we'll explore the town and its eateries and numerous dog-friendly brew pubs, the Big Obsidian Flow, Paulina Lake, and Paulina Creek Falls, as well as the Cascade Lakes National Scenic Byway. While camping we'll also do some kayaking on Devils Lake and along the Deschutes River right in town, and use that opportunity to explain what kayak gear we prefer to use, and why.
