Our SRE-China is honoured to have invited Le Jianhua, psychotherapist from Alzheimer's Diagnosis and Treatment Centre of Shanghai Jiaotong University, to present a series of lectures on Alzheimer's disease.
As a neurodegenerative disease, early diagnosis of Alzheimer's disease is crucial. Since the 1990s, memory clinics have been set up in China's hospitals to provide patients with convenient and professional diagnosis and treatment services. Cognitive function can be initially assessed through tools such as self-assessment and other-assessment scales, combined with community screening activities such as drawing tests.
In terms of medication, existing drugs such as carbadine and donepezil can improve symptoms, but they cannot cure the disease and may be associated with side effects. The high cost of new drugs also discourages many families.
Therefore, non-pharmacological treatments are particularly important. A variety of approaches, including physical and mental exercise, healthy eating, cognitive training and social activities, aim to enrich the lives of elderly patients and promote their physical and mental health. Personalised treatment programmes are developed according to patients' interests, abilities and life experiences to enhance their sense of self-worth.
In addition, healthcare integration models are being actively explored, such as the Shanghai Aixi Healthcare Alliance, which provides patients with one-stop services ranging from science promotion, community screening to professional care through the integration of healthcare and elderly care resources. A two-way referral mechanism ensures that patients receive continuous medical services, while the development of new technologies and methods promotes the integration of treatment and care.
