Growing up, The Penguin faced constant teasing due to his appearance, leading him to hate the world. When Oswald asked a girl to prom, she cruelly rejected him. Confused, he brings up the note she left on his desk. Her friends laugh, as it turns out they pranked him with a fake love note. In the present, Penguin attends a criminal auction and encounters a woman in a cage seeking help. The next day, he reassures her that he won't harm her, explaining that he didn't buy her because he doesn't buy people. The woman is so grateful he rescued her. As weeks pass, Penguin finds himself in love for the first time. Oswald confesses his love, telling her how she actually saved him. However, their moment is disrupted by laughter from a cook facing his direction. Despite his initial rage, Violet manages to calm him. Months after the chef crossed paths with Oswald, he took his own life. Violet notices Penguin has a grin that she instinctively knows is evil. She then discovers his scrapbook containing the chef's obituary and other articles detailing the dark things he’s done. Terrified, she starts packing. When Oswald confronts her, she recoils, calling him a monster. Later, Penguin apologizes that things didn't work out and hopes they can stay friends. He then wishes Violet the best in her future and says goodbye to her in the same cage where they met.
