Gyrfalcon in the Netherlands - Giervalk op Texel

Описание к видео Gyrfalcon in the Netherlands - Giervalk op Texel

Today I went to the island Texel for a second attempt to film the very rare Gyrfalcon (Falco rusticolus) that has been hanging around for a number of weeks or even months now. The weather was not as nice as predicted, quite cloudy and hazy, but I was happy to be able to get some footage. Especially the skirmish with the Goshawk was nice to capture. One can see they are of comparable size.

The Gyrfalcon is a very rare visitor to the Netherlands, with only 9 accepted records to date, the last one in 2012. On January 27, 2024 the bird shown in this video was discovered and on February 3 I went to see it. It was sitting on a fence post very far away. It relocated a couple of times, but unfortunately remained impossibly far away. The area is very inaccessible, so no chance to get closer. The bird was also inactive most of the time. It had eaten from a dead Murre the day before, so it did not need to hunt for food, it seemed. Anyway, I could not get recognizable footage of the bird that day. That's why I went a second time.

Later it became clear the bird had already been seen on December 7, 2023.
Incredibly it went unnoticed or rather unidentified for almost 2 months.
