Uber and Lyft drivers are charging up. As fuel prices increase, more drivers are switching to electric vehicles. The new electric cars save on gas costs but are substantially more expensive. 𝐈𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠𝐥𝐲, 𝐝𝐫𝐢𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐬 𝐚𝐫𝐞 𝐫𝐞𝐩𝐨𝐫𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐛𝐞𝐭𝐭𝐞𝐫 𝐭𝐢𝐩𝐬 𝐰𝐡𝐞𝐧 𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐲 𝐝𝐫𝐢𝐯𝐞 𝐚𝐧 𝐄𝐕. California gas prices are now averaging over $6 per gallon. And in that environment, drivers are finding a better trade off between paying more for an electric vehicle and avoiding hundred of dollars in additional fuel costs. To help hasten the transition, 𝐔𝐛𝐞𝐫 𝐢𝐬 𝐚𝐥𝐬𝐨 𝐨𝐟𝐟𝐞𝐫𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐝𝐫𝐢𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐬 𝐚𝐧 𝐞𝐱𝐭𝐫𝐚 𝐝𝐨𝐥𝐥𝐚𝐫 𝐩𝐞𝐫 𝐞𝐥𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐫𝐢𝐜 𝐭𝐫𝐢𝐩. Those incentives and rising fuel costs are improving the adoption of EV’s. Gridwise, an app that helps rideshare drivers track their trips, reported almost a 200% increase in the usage of Tesla’s in May.

Uber partnered with Hertz late last year to allow its drivers to rent electric vehicles. Since launching that initiative, more than 15,000 Uber drivers have rented a Tesla. That’s a good start but it’s a small percent of the 1 million Uber drivers in the US. Both Uber and Lyft have committed to be fully electric in Europe and North American by 2030.

But today, the average electric vehicle costs over $60,000 and it’s expected to rise further as lithium battery prices increase. Gas prices will need to remain elevated to make the economics work. Another issue facing drivers is the availability of charging stations and the time required to charge the vehicle. If charging stations are available, it can take up to 45 minutes to fully charge the car.

But in California, the most popular state for EV’s, lines at charging stations can add substantially to that time. And drivers only get paid when they’re driving. There’s no compensation for sitting in line at the charging station.
