Dante Alighieri was born in 1265 in Florence, and died 1321 in exile in Ravenna. His greatest work, The Divine Comedy, tells the story of Dante-the-Pilgrim's epic journey to the bottom of Hell, his ascent of Mt. Purgatory, and his journey through Heaven where he reaches the presence of God Himself. Dante is guided first by the Roman poet, Virgil, and then by his beloved Beatrice.
