How Karnataka Is Leading India’s Big Push For Building A Semiconductor Ecosystem

On 29th April, Prime Minister Narendra Modi delivered an address at the inaugural ceremony of the Semicon India Conference in Bengaluru. India's consumption of semiconductors will cross $80 billion by 2026 (screenshot) and $110 billion by 2030. Semiconductors are very integral to the functioning of critical technologies that are of commercial and strategic importance.

India has been seriously making attempts to build a complete semiconductor ecosystem including domestic chip factories. GoI recently set up the India Semiconductor Mission (ISM) & invested 10 billion USD (Rs 76,000 crores) to attract investments to India & make India into a global hub of semiconductors manufacturing. The Production Linked Incentive (PLI) scheme will be spanned over a period of 6 years and nearly Rs 2.3 lakh crores will be provided as an incentive.

ISMC announced earlier this month that it will invest $3 billion (around Rs 23,000 crore) in Karnataka to set up a chip-making plant. If what ISMC claims were to be true, this is said to create at least 1,500 direct jobs and 10,000 indirect ones.
