Este seu olhar - Music & Portuguese lyric by A.C. Jobim; English lyric by me. Gene Lees also came up with an English version, as did Paul Sonnenberg. Sonnenberg sings both, pretty cool, if you go to his website or look for the title on youtube. A gorgeous tune which I’ve loved since first hearing it, and part of the Brazilian bossa nova wave that took over the world back in the day. Performances worth hearing: João Gilberto (life always begins with João Gilberto), Leila Pinheiro, Toquinho, Nara Leão, Elis Regina, Rosa Passos, Vanessa da Mata, Charlie Byrd, Diana Krall.

Uke key: C major. I originally set this tune in F but, coming back to it, I realized it was way too high. After a bit a experimentation, I realized it could work a fourth lower, hence the new key. It sounds pretty good, and I love the way the tune seems to allow you to make up the time, with all sorts of rubato and all that. The one possible drawback is that, now that the piece is set much lower, you end up with lots of 3-note voicings that are on the stretchy side. Maybe think of it as an Ashtanga yoga class for your left hand. Hence: Cmaj7 (400x); C#d7 (643x); Dmin7 (521x); D#d7 (5320); Emin7 (743x). I don’t figure those voicings are going to catch on in a big way, especially if you play baritone hahaha! You can always play triads, but it won’t sound too good. Anyhow, let me know if these voicings are too weird for you.

I sing it here both in the original Portuguese and in an English version of my own invention, trying, as usual, to stay as close to Jobim’s lyric as I could. The form is ABAC, 8 bars apiece. The A section consists of a gently ascending sequence, with the B section moving the line back down to a cadence on G (G7#5). The C section starts like a repeat of B, but soon goes its own way, with a magical move to a Gmin7 at “pudesse entender.”
