H. Richard Niebuhr's book Christ and Culture is a Christian Classic. It it he discusses the four ways in which Christians have interacted with Culture. The 5 models are: Christ AGAIST Culture, Christ OF Culture, Christ ABOVE Culture, Christ in PARADOX with Culture, and Christ TRANSFORMING or REDEEMING Culture. Niebuhr's framework is not without its critics, but I think it is a useful beginning to conversations about conflict in the Church. It helps us to understand what may be behind our ideas and those of others.
