When I walked in darkness
When I stepped off the path
A thousand years of warnings
Chime'd the shadow of death.
When I raged on the hilltops
When I sailed through the gloom
Rode on cavernous waters
To a table of slaughter.
When I put down the book
And went my own way
I saw conquest and fame
Nothing stood... in my way.
I road on black coat-tails
I dined with the best
I ate out my values
And sold them for press.

And He called my name
Even when I went astray
And He wrote my name
In the book of life, how great
MERCY... oh what can it mean?

He stopped me in my tracks
As I walked another path
He opened my frail eyes
To see where my road did lead.

In the valleys tracks oft did fail
And waves of doubt crept in again.
But His light would shine
Piercing precision to my soul.
And every minute I spent with Him
An hour of life began again.
I yearned I poured I cried to Him
And all my life began again.

And He called my name
Even when I went astray
And He wrote my name
In the book of life, how great
MERCY... oh what can it mean?
