USMLE Step 1 Pass/Fail - How did we get here?

How did a multiple-choice question test of basic science with only peripheral relevance to actual patient care become the king of medical education and residency selection - and then collapse under the force of its own weight?

This is a version of a presentation I gave in January 2021 to a group of residency program directors and academic physicians in a highly-competitive subspecialty. I was one of four speakers; my job was to set the stage for the others to discuss practical strategies for applicant evaluation in a post-Step 1 world.
