Perhaps you’ve wondered if you should do yoga before doing meditation practice?

If our body is uncomfortable, it becomes a distraction, and yoga postures prepare our body for meditation by building strength and flexibility, allowing us sit comfortably longer. The traditional, authentic practice of yoga was largely the practice of meditation, and yoga can release energy in our body, making it easier to rest the mind during meditation.

Also, letting the breath guide our movements, as they do, in a yoga practice helps us prepare for greater concentration while meditating. There are several techniques implemented with pranayama meditation and the benefits of incorporating controlled breathing in yoga include calming our nervous system, promoting focus and relaxation, and relieving stress.

Some recommended poses (asanas):
• Child’s pose to stretch our entire body while in a relaxed posture.
• Mountain pose to establish grounding and stability, steadying our breath.
• Low lunge to stretch the hips and strengthen the legs, areas that become tight while seated.
• Tree pose to support balance and concentration.
• Corpse pose settle the mind and body, allow our muscles to relax after stretching.
