1930's Wyandotte Lighted Dump Truck Restoration Time Lapse

Описание к видео 1930's Wyandotte Lighted Dump Truck Restoration Time Lapse

I picked up this 1930's Wyandotte lighted dump truck from a local antique shop. It was in pretty rough shape. Missing two wheels, the head lights were broken, the battery contact bar was missing for the headlights. The battery retainer spring was missing as well as the front bumper. The entire truck was rusted and needed help.

I started by grinding off the peened side of the axles to allow removal. Once the axles and wheels were removed, I continued by removing the dump bed and cab. Disassembled the cab and proceeded to the sandblaster. The paint and rust came off very quickly and showed that the overall condition of the metal itself was in great shape. Off camera I straightened a few parts including the dump bed tail gate, the front fenders, the mounting tabs for the cab and box. I then worked with the switch which was completely frozen. I didn’t want to remove it from the chassis because I have no way of replicating the type of rivet that was originally used. Moving onto the axles where cleaned up on the bench grinder and then using a drill with sandpaper until I got the desired finish. They were a little more pitted than I cared for, but I decided to use them anyway. The grille was then cleaned with the wire brush on the bench grinder and then nickel plated and buffed. Now that all parts were clean it was time to start painting. All parts were coated once and then a second coat after 10 minutes. Allowed to dry for 24 hours to completely cure. Prior to assembly I laid our all parts for this unit which included several reproduction parts, the wheels were replaced due to missing two and the two that were with the truck were not usable. The front bumper, headlight contact bar, and battery spring were all missing, reproduction parts were used for these. Reassembly to the unit when very smoothly outside of slipping off the tab for the dump bed mount and scuffing the bed paint. After reassembly and installing the D cell battery I found that the switch contact had to be bent to make correct contact. Once it made correct contact it then would not stay connected. To fix this I had to crimp the switch down slightly to provide enough friction. Overall, I was extremely happy with how the truck came out.

Things to note,
There should be a spring under the dump bed. The original was broken, and I have been unable to find a reproduction spring. I may play around with building one myself later. Also, I have not locked the axle shafts onto the wheels yet. I currently am trying to figure out the best way to do this.
