Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala took office as the seventh Director-General of the WTO on 1 March. She became the first woman and the first African to serve as Director-General. Her term of office will expire on 31 August 2025. In her first day at the WTO, she met with WTO directors and took an oath of office. She also attended a meeting of the General Council, the topmost decision-making body of the WTO, and visited an ice sculpture set up by non-governmental organizations calling for the speedy conclusion of a deal to limit harmful fisheries subsidies.
