The flood situation has worsened after Durgapur barrage has released over 10 lakh cusec of water within 36 hours. Districts like West Midnapore, Burdwan, Hooghly and Bankura are also facing worse floods and the situation was turned grave after Damodar Valley Corporation (DVC) has allegedly released 75,492 additional cusecs of water. Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Tuesday urged the DVC not to release additional water which might inundate more areas in South Bengal. Taking serious note of this man-made crisis, West Bengal state Irrigation department has written to the DVC requesting them not to release additional water but they have allegedly turned a deaf ear. Panchet dam has a capacity of holding water up to 7 feet. Over 140,000 cusec of water was released through the Durgapur Barrage on Tuesday late night. However, experts are apprehending outbreak of epidemic as the water starts receding.
