Murud Janjira Fort is a perfect reason to visit Raigad district in Maharashtra. The fort, locally referred to as Janjira Fort, dates back to the late 17th century, but some sources state that its history could be traced back to the 1100s. Back then, the fort served as a stronghold for the Siddis, who were formidable naval and military commanders in the region.Murud Janjira Fort’s most prominent feature is its robust fortification. When we take the fort’s structure and location into consideration, it sure looks like something that’s quite impenetrable. And it was just that. The fort has never been conquered by outside forces. It changed hands only after it was handed over to the Indian government post independence from British rule in 1947.
