(29 Jun 1975) During the Fiesta of St Peter and Paul, Pope Paul VI sat on a throne in front of an alter in St Peter's Square and began the 13th Year of his reign by ordaining 354 new priests. The Pope referred to these new priests as 'the salt of the earth, and the light of the world'. Nealy 100,000 holy year pilgrims and families of the new priests from 50 nations and every continient packed the square for what Vatican officials said was the largest ordination in the anals of the Roman Catholic Church. The new priests then prostrated themselves facing the Pope who knelt on a crimson cushions during the chant of the litany of the saints. The pope then sat smiling and nodding in friendly gesture as each of the 354 new priests approached his throne for the laying on of hands rite ordaining them into priesthood.
