On April 21, over 40 students marched in Virginia Tech President Timothy Sands’ office to deliver a letter. This letter is one of several sent throughout the semester to President Sands that calls for him to pen a letter to Nike and put them on notice.

The multinational shoe and clothing company has come under fire recently for their refusal to allow an independent workers' rights organization called the Workers’ Rights Consortium to inspect their factories.

While Nike’s actions do not necessarily mean they are in violation of any American or International law, the students and members of the Virginia Tech Chapter of United Students against Sweatshops (USAS) have noted that their actions do conflict with the Virginia Tech Athletic Department’s contract with the apparel giant.

Students hope that the letters from Sands and other presidents of universities across the country will help motivate the multi-billion dollar corporation to allow the WRC to inspect their factories and ensure they respect the rights of workers across the globe.

Sands was not there to accept the letter but did ring the closing bell of the New York Stock Exchange on April 26.
