STORYLINE:
US-led forces conducted a raid with air support early on Thursday in the Baghdad neighbourhood of Sadr City that killed three insurgents and injured three civilians, the US military said, whilst Iraqi police said eight civilians were killed.
The military said the incident occurred about 12:30 am Thursday (2030 GMT Wednesday), when a joint US-Iraqi force was patrolling a neighbourhood in the southern part of the impoverished Shiite area.
It said it was searching for an insurgent cell suspected of smuggling weapons, including powerful explosives from Iran.
''US and Iraqi troops backed by US jet fighters and helicopters raided our area at 1:30 am (2130 GMT)," a local resident told AP Television.
Local officials said an American tank destroyed a mourning tent that had been erected to hold bereaved guests of a recently deceased resident, injuring three people who were sleeping inside.
AP Television filmed a collapsed tent, with its metal support posts bent and the plastic chairs inside splintered.
The force came under fire from two buildings and, after a gunbattle, called in an airstrike, which killed three armed insurgents, the US military said.
Three civilians were injured in the raid and treated by US-led forces, the statement from the military said.
The US military also said it detained four of the insurgents.
Iraqi police and medical officials said the airstrike damaged three houses and killed eight civilians and wounded nine others.
The reason for the discrepancy in the two accounts was not immediately clear.
The police and medical officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorised to talk to the media.
A funeral procession was held for one of the raid victims.
US-led forces have routinely carried out raids searching for Shiite militants since they launched a Baghdad security crackdown on February 14.
