因为房颤和房扑都是起源于心房的心律失常是心房的冲动频率，较房性心动过速更快的一种心律失常。临床症状非常相似治疗上也是相近的，但是两者也是有区别的，首先房扑的时候心房的肌群是在同一个兴奋点的带动下同时收缩和舒张，患者自己摸脉搏可能不是特别齐但是有规律。房颤时心房上有多处的兴奋点各自为政杂乱无章处于一种无政府的状态，导致心房的乱颤患者自己数脉搏就会发现，每一跳都是不一样的，用听诊器听诊心音是强弱不等心率也是绝对不等的而且我们的心率和脉率是不整齐的，两者在心电图上很容易辨别，房颤的心电图是一个细小的房颤波其特点是大小不一形态不同间距不等，我们临床上把它叫F波。频率呢一般大于每分钟300次，如果在心电图上我们看到大的锯齿形的波形大小形态相似间距一致，我们叫大F波。频率大于每分钟250次这就是房扑的波对于快速的心率的房颤房扑，我们需要紧急的进行抢救控制心室率否则会导致更严重的，恶性心律失常室颤严重威胁患者的生命安全，所以对于这类情况我们可以选择药物或者是电除颤争分夺秒地抢救生命。
