Palaekastro is a village in the extreme east of the island of Crete. In Minoan times the village existed with it's port at the historic site of Itanos along the coast. Palaekastro therefore was one of the most important trade hubs of the Minoan era. Farmers had found Minoan Moulds and a Kouros sculpture at Palaekastro. Archeologist now that it was an important archeological site in ancient times. Today the village has 1100 inhabitants who live of agricultural products like olives (olive oil) and grapes (wine and raki).

Close to Palaekastro there is a hill known as Kastri. This hill used to have an old fortress protecting the village and it's area. Palaekastro means palae=old and kastro=fortress. In the Middle Ages the Venetians established a fortress on the Kastri Hill. The fortress became a ruin and the stones were re-used for the building of houses in the village.
