This is what the future of RTS looks like thanks to Sanctuary: Shattered Sun, an indie game project by visionary developers who have added levolution to the RTS genre as a gameplay map mechanic. You can not only shatter a Dyson Sphere and drop entire enemy bases down into the Sun, but also freeze rivers and lakes to trap navies or drive down the ice and attack the enemy base. Sanctuary: Shattered Sun is the upcoming sci-fi real time strategy on a grand scale, with both base building and unit combat featuring a commander unit, three distinct factions, just two resources, three technology levels, a streaming economy system, weather control and it is set on a Dyson Sphere built around our very own Sun in the distant future.

On the surface of an artificial world built around the Sun three factions fight for dominance and they can not only shatter this Dyson sphere and drop entire enemy bases down into the Sun, but also freeze rivers and lakes to trap navies or drive down the ice and attack the enemy from an unexpected angle.

This, my fellow real time strategy fans, is what the future of RTS looks like thanks to Sanctuary: Shattered Sun. An indie project by some of the most talented and visionary developers I have ever meet in all my years of showcasing new and upcoming RTS games.

I have to thank these developers at Enhearten Media not just for their incredible effort in what amounts to adding real time levolution to the RTS genre, and pushing the envelope further than ever before, but also for this incredible access to not one, but three working demos of Sanctuary: Shattered Sun. I think that now, you finally see why this grand scale RTS has this particular title, if you didn’t already realize that when I previously showcased it on my channel.

All the gameplay you will see here was recorded by me in these demos but do keep in mind that this is a pre alpha development build. Meaning only some of the planned content and features are implemented right now. The rest are still work in progress so for example you can build bombers in one faction, but they don't have any weapons yet, or take some of the higher tier Titan units for a walk but they don’t have anything to fire with.

I must say I am very happy with the scale and performance of the game. True I have a very good PC, but the number of units you can watch fight each other in the performance demo is just astounding.

As I explained in my previous showcases of Sanctuary: Shattered Sun, this game is based on a system of progressive technological tiers like some of the most well known games of the grand RTS strategy sub genre: Supreme Commander or Total Annihilation. It also features the Commander robot as well as a streaming economy made up of Alloy and Energy.
This part of the gameplay is what I tested the most in the third demo called Survival, and with all three available factions: EDA, Guard and Chosen. Even the fog of war in this game is still work in progress.

The commander unit and the engineer have similar construction options, but movement speed is much higher on the engineer so it is the constructor unit you want to use to build alloy extractors on extraction points marked in yellow around your base and across the map.
