Another thing that grew from roots prior to WWII and blossomed afterward was the Annales School. Marc Bloch formulated an interdisciplinary approach by combining economics, anthropology, and sociology to investigate what he called the mentalite, or the overall mentality of a given society. Fernand Braudel applied that to massive time-scales. This isn’t 10 or 20 years but 10 or 20 centuries, which they called the longue duree. Braudel typified this macro-historical approach the school was known for.
