Olaf has always been one of my favorite melee champs in the game, but on many occasions my attitude in top lane and his required playstyle didn't mesh. Luckily, I hadn't played League of Legends in a while, and I'd watched a lot of games in spectator mode, as well as MLG. I've learned a few strategies regarding Olaf since then, such as hyperaggression and a lot of big damage trading, especially by midgame or against characters who don't have a very bursty early game. Put simply, most melee opponents and even some ranged opponents, if they don't take Olaf out of the game early enough, Olaf will simply ignore or kill them during midgame, when he's build his health items and his true damage starts coming off of cooldown very often. The downside to Olaf is that he is simply an insanely bursty melee, anti-carry, tanky DPS, without much utility to add to a team. That, and first picking Olaf against a person who knows match-ups very well in draft mode can end up hurting your team a lot.

Build: It varies. Mostly, you should be focused on being as beefy as you can be, so what I usually do is get boots and 3 pots, and if I'm behind I get Wriggles. If not, I go for 2 Doran's Blades. After that I go straight for Merc Treads, and then there are 2 options you can go for; Trinity Force for games against very high mobility and burst, Frozen Mallet against AP and moderate mobility, or Warmog's Armor for low mobility games and increased sustain to avoid being burst down. After that, Maw of Malmortius, Frozen Heart, Randuin's Omen, and then Force of Nature.
