Better known as the Savior of the Union and a two-term U.S. President, the personal family life of Ulysses S. Grant receives far less attention than it deserves. Join our esteemed panelists for a live discussion as they delve into the intimate family life that helped shape one of America’s greatest leaders. Through this program, light will be shed on the Grant family, highlighting a relatable story of love and support that transcends generations.

Our esteemed panelists are:

Dr. Marie Kelsey is a graduate of the University of Wisconsin with a Ph.D. in Library Science. She is a Professor Emerita at the College of St. Scholastica in Duluth, Minnesota. She has nurtured an interest in U.S. Grant for 25 years and is a member of the Ulysses S. Grant Association. Dr. Kelsey is the author of Ulysses S. Grant, a Bibliography (Greenwood Press 2005) and maintains the Ulysses S. Grant Information Center website and Facebook page.

Ulysses Grant Dietz served as curator of Decorative Arts at the Newark Museum from 1980 to 2017. He was appointed Chief Curator in 2012. He received his BA in French from Yale University in 1977, and his MA in American Material Culture from the University of Delaware’s Winterthur Program in 1980. Mr. Dietz has published numerous articles on decorative arts, drawn from the Newark Museum’s nationally known collections. He is the author of Dream House: The White House as an American Home (Acanthus Press 2009). Mr. Dietz is a great-grandson of Ulysses and Julia Grant and an active promoter of their legacy.

Nick Sacco is a Park Ranger with the National Park Service at the Ulysses S. Grant National Historic Site near St. Louis, Missouri. He regularly gives tours of Grant’s St. Louis home, White Haven, and has written several published articles on 19th-century U.S. history. In 2019, Mr. Sacco wrote an article about Grant’s views on slavery that was published in The Journal of the Civil War Era, and in 2020, won an outstanding service award from the National Park Service. Mr. Sacco holds a master’s degree in history from the University of Indiana-Purdue University, Indianapolis.

Moderator: Ben Kemp is the Operations Manager for the Grant Cottage State Historic Site. Mr. Kemp is an avid U.S. Grant researcher, living historian and presenter who has been featured on C-Span, PBS, and the 2020 Grant documentary on the History Channel.
