Описание к видео Footage of African Union Mission in Somalia - Unravel Travel TV

STORY: Members of the African Union Mission in Somalia (AMISOM) are conducting daily patrols in the southern port city of Kismayo in Somalia. Fierce fighting broke out between rival militias fighting for control of the town earlier this month. The patrols are conducted by Kenyan and Sierra Leonean troops serving with the AU Mission, and have helped restore relative calm to the country's second largest city. Kismayo is located just over 500 kilometers southwest of Mogadishu - the capital. The city and its port were formerly under the control of Islamist extremist group al Shabaab until October last year. The severely weakened al Qaeda-linked group was pushed out by Somali National Forces supported by AMISOM's Kenyan contingent, as has been the case in most Somali towns. At the Kismayo General Hospital, victims of the fighting are still being treated. But Somalia's decades of conflict have taken their toll. The hospital has only two doctors and lacks proper facilities and medical personnel. Mohamed Jama says he is lucky to have survived the bullet that hit him in the arm and chest during the clashes. His relatives and friends had no other choice but to rush him here. "The hospital does not have medication and does not have doctors, but we have nowhere else to go," Jama said. The United Nations Humanitarian Coordinator for Somalia, Philippe Lazzarani paid a visit to Kismayo to assess the situation on the ground. He met with community leaders and visited the victims. " I just visited the hospital of Kismayo, it has been absolutely remarkable the way the situation has been dealt by the local civil society here," said Lazzarani. "I told them that the UN and the international organisations will continue their support." Kismayo's port, once a supply route for the al Shabaab militants and a major source of revenue, is now registering an increasing flow of commercial vessels from as far as the UAE. With increased security, ships like the Liberty Aura, dock at this port at least twice monthly - ferrying food, building materials and even cosmetics. Hashi Ahmed Mohamed is the vessel's agent in Kismayo, and he says things have changed for the better here. "Business is better because of the security situation that has improved since the KDF arrived in Kismayo. There has been a big difference and we can now do our businesses freely," said Hashi. AMISOM forces in Kismayo got a boost in the fight against al Shabaab, with the recent deployment of the last batch of troops from the Republic of Sierra Leone Armed Forces (RSLAF). The West African troops are the fifth country to provide troops for the African Union forces in Somalia, joining Burundi, Djibouti, Uganda and Kenya. The RSLAF troops conduct joint operations with the Kenyan contingent in support of the Somali National Army (SNA) as they provide security in the Jubaland region of the country. After a long day spent patrolling in Kismayo, many of the soldiers join other Muslim faithful around the region and the world, to pray for peace and break their fast in observance of the Holy Month of Ramadan.
