This is a 1966 Renault Dauphine. The Dauphine was Renault's economy car of the time and succeeded the 4CV. Some 2 million of these were produced between 1956 and 1967. It’s not only very pretty, but sports some interesting features too. Like the preceding 4CV it is rear engined and rear wheel drive. This layout also gave the Dauphine some of its distinguishing features, like the vented rear and functional air intakes along the side of the car. The engine is a 845cc 4 cylinder good for 27hp and a top speed of 70mph (112km/h). It is built beautifully simply, this is for instance the air filter. My favourite feature is hidden in the front of the car though. Upon first sight nothing stands out, but open the bonnet and pull this hidden latch and you’ll find that the section of the bumper holding the licence plate has folded away to reveal the spare wheel. Now you can simply slide the spare wheel forward. I do have some worries about the Dauphine’s crumple zone, but it certainly makes for a great photo opportunity.
