Keratoconus is an eye condition in which the cornea, the clear front surface of the eye, becomes thin and gradually bulges outward into a cone shape, causing blurred and distorted vision.

It occurs when the corneal tissue loses its natural strength and cannot maintain its normal round shape. As a result, the cornea slowly protrudes forward due to internal eye pressure. Keratoconus most commonly begins during the teenage years, making adolescence a key period for early detection.

The exact cause is not always known, but factors such as genetics, frequent eye rubbing, long-standing eye allergies, and certain connective tissue disorders are known to increase the risk.

Early diagnosis is crucial, as timely treatment can slow or stabilise the condition and help preserve vision. Regular eye check-ups are especially important for teenagers and young adults.
