St Albans is a small city in Hertfordshire England. What attracts people to visit this place? History!
This video is a quick virtual guide showing ancient Roman city ruins, Roman theatre, modern St Albans, etc.
People were living there even before Romans came. The Iron Age settlement was discovered by archaeologists. Then, Romans founded another settlement here and named it Verulamium (the name was derived from already existed settlement's name). Verulamium was second largest Roman city after Londinium. Then Anlgo-Saxons lived here when Roman rule ended. In Anglo-Saxon times the first abbey was founded in St Albans in 8th century. By the way, the name of St Albans comes from the fist British saint Alban. The legend says that he was executed by Romans.
