Following, yesterday’s (6 May) ruling by the German constitutional court in Karlsruhe that tried to overturn part of a judgment of the European Court of Justice finding that the European Central Bank’s (ECB) Public Sector Purchase Programme (PSPP), specifically the proportionality of that judgement; the European Commissioner for the Economy Paolo Gentiloni said that the College of Commissioners discussed the judgement with the legal service. There were two very clear points, according to Gentiloni. Firstly, they reaffirmed the primacy of European law and secondly, he said that the European Commission will always respect the independence of the ECB in its implementation of monetary policy.
