It was farmer Patty Dolan's great moment after all the hard work his racing potato is accepted to represent Ireland as a contestant in the "Coupe des Legumes" the first time a potato would run in the most famous automobile race in the world. Never mind he wasn't given much of a chance to win; the world thought Austria's Carrot, and Germany's Cucumber were much faster, and, of course, America's Corn Cob might outlast them all.

Patterned after the historic French Grand Prix races of the early 20th century, author and artist Thomas Houtz weaves by rhyme and beautiful illustrations, the marvelous tale of the surprising success of the underdog Paddy, and his magnificent, racing potato; of the wilting Lettuce, the unlucky Carrot, the poor timing of the Artichoke, and the Tomato and all the other charismatic opponents in this imaginary race where all the cars are made from vegetables. With a roar and great cloud of dust they were off....may the best man and vegetable win.

Tom Houtz, is a freelance author and illustrator who has had a long career in the publishing industry, including as artistic director for the prestigious, journal Automobile Quarterly. He's also a life long friend of The Potato Museum's Tom Hughes. The two Toms first met in college.
